Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis (AD), is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder characterized by red, itchy, dry, and inflamed skin. It affects individuals of all ages, although it is more common in children.^[1] The prevalence of eczema is increasing globally, with higher rates reported in industrialized regions. It represents a significant public health burden, affecting approximately 6% of children and adolescents worldwide. Eczema may present as either acute or chronic disease, with symptoms including intense itching, redness, scaling, dryness, skin thickening, and recurrent flares. The morphology of lesions varies according to disease stage and patient age. When eczema affects visible areas such as the face and hands, it can have a profound impact on quality of life, leading to social stigma, rejection, emotional distress, and reduced self-esteem. Environmental factors, particularly heat and humidity changes, can exacerbate symptoms by increasing sweating, itching, and skin barrier disruption. Emerging evidence also suggests that dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis may contribute to chronic inflammation and disease persistence. The priority in treatment is focusing on a daily skin moisturizing regimen with a fragrance-free ointment with limited preservatives.^[2] To achieve true eczema control, treatment should extend beyond surface symptom management. Addressing skin barrier dysfunction, immune dysregulation, transepidermal water loss, and chronic inflammation through deep moisturization and targeted therapies is essential for reducing flares, improving skin health, and enhancing patient quality of life.
