Sensitive Skin: Needs Beyond Cleansing

Dr. Rajesh Agarwal 411 Views

Sensitive skin is common, with approximately 71% of adults reporting some degree of sensitivity and around 40% reporting moderate or high sensitivity. It may present with stinging, burning, pruritus, pain, or tightness, often without visible clinical signs. Gentle, soap-free, syndet, and pH-compatible cleansers can minimize barrier disruption, particularly in dry-sensitive, acne-prone, rosacea-prone, atopic, and post-procedure skin.[1][2][3][4] Ceramides support barrier lipid organization, while glycerin and hyaluronic acid support hydration. Avoiding hot water, scrubbing, harsh soaps, fragrance-heavy formulations, and unnecessary exfoliation can reduce irritation. Supportive cleansing and moisturization are especially important when topical Retinoids, Benzoyl Peroxide, or Salicylic Acid contribute to dryness and irritation.[5][6][7]
